ClasTran was founded in 1997 by community leaders in the Greater Birmingham area with a mission to improve the cost efficiency, increase the quantity, and improve the quality of paratransit service for the elderly and persons with disabilities. For nearly twenty-five years, ClasTran has provided critical transportation service to dialysis, medical appointments, grocery stores, and pharmacies at an affordable cost.

Our service is funded primarily by federal grant programs through the Federal Transit Administration (FTA) and the Alabama Department of Transportation (ALDOT). Jefferson and Shelby counties, the City of Birmingham, and other municipalities generously provide most of the matching funds for these grants; however, a portion of these matching funds are raised by generous donors like you. These grants and matching funds enable ClasTran to provide transportation service at an affordable cost for those 60 years of age and older and for persons with disabilities. The fare is only four dollars for a one-way trip.

Even with the low cost of fare, some of our riders struggle to pay for service, especially during the holiday season. Some of these riders need transportation to critical dialysis and medical appointments. Others need access to a grocery store or pharmacy. Your generous donation will provide transportation for those in need this holiday season.

ClasTran is proud to provide a much needed service in our community, and we hope to continue doing so for years to come. During 2019 alone, ClasTran provided 167,882 trips to people with no other mode of transportation. This would not have been possible without the support of generous donors like you.
